The main groove's caixa line is a son clave with the 2-side first. The xequere parts are either the normal maracatu part of 1 and-a-2 and-a-3 etc, or a samba-style one-e-and-a-two-e-and-a-etc. The surdo variations come in order A, B, C, A... repeating until a break is called. It always starts over with variation A after any break, regardless of where in the cycle the break was called. Break 2 may sound familiar from Evolucao dos Baques, another Jorge Martins piece (written with Scott Kettner). After break 2, all instruments except the surdos and xequeres return to the main groove. Surdos play a three measure "intro". That wraps up with Variation A and the surdos return the main groove after that. Xequeres remain out until after Variation A and join back in again. That Variation A counts as part of the variation sequence, so they continue on with Variation B next, and so on.
